Problem

Problem

Diners at popular restaurants during peak hours experience frustration due to long waits for seating and delays in receiving their food upon ordering. This can lead to a negative dining experience and potentially deter them from returning.

I leveraged Google to conduct market research, gaining valuable insights into the food industry's current trends and demographics. This research filled knowledge gaps and informed key design decisions for my project, ensuring it aligns with market needs and potential user preferences.

Users get annoyed when they must wait to enter a restaurant at peak hours, and they are also disappointed when their food is not served on time.

Market Research

To discover more about the food industry's market trends and demographics, I conducted market research through Google. Through market research, I was able to get a more thorough understanding of the industry and fill in the gaps in my knowledge to better inform my future design decisions. Here are some of the important decisions.

Restaurants now have half-hour to one-hour wait times to get inside at peak times

People who choose to eat at restaurants do so for a variety of reasons, including the food, ambience, and culture

Many restaurants are losing customers because they are unable to adequately manage the number of people that arrive at peak times

The number of enterprises in this industry is constantly increasing, resulting in increased competition. This market is quite popular and is expected to expand significantly in the next few years

It is inextricably linked to the rise in the number of app users, as individuals mostly use apps when dining out

Comparative Analysis

Comparative Analysis

While competitors like OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp focus solely on reservations, and Uber Eats and DoorDash handle delivery, Speedy Eats identified a gap in the market through a SWOT analysis. By offering a unified solution encompassing restaurant discovery, reservation, pre-ordering with customizable arrival sequence, and real-time order tracking, Speedy Eats aims to create a seamless and convenient dining experience for users, setting it apart from the competition.

Initial assumptions suggested a uniform user base focused solely on saving time and effort when eating out. However, user interviews unveiled diverse motivations, necessitating the creation of personas to represent these differences. These personas guided the app's development, evolving as research and design progressed. Ultimately, the personas were consolidated into one, reflecting the key user pain points: extensive wait times during peak hours and delayed food service. This singular persona ensured the app's features effectively addressed the core user needs.

By creating and analyzing persona and empathy maps, I discovered critical emotional and procedural touch points that the app must address. The anxiety someone might feel, for example, if John wishes to go to a restaurant with his colleagues at peak hour to eat a favorite dish The journey map depicts John's experience of going to a restaurant and eating his favorite cuisine with his colleagues.

Low-fidelity prototype testing enabled me to gain a better understanding of how consumers anticipated doing the activities I was focusing on. I recognized which improvements needed to be made to lay the framework for a more fully realized high-fidelity prototype by watching their touch and swipe actions and, more crucially, having a dialogue with them about what they expected and when. Small things like actionable and consistent iconography, as well as consistent paths to return, would become critical components of the design system.

Creating Visual Design

Visually articulating all potential aspects of theSpeedy Eats brand (product, marketing, and beyond) meant defining a baseline design system that identified key elements of its visual vocabulary. I wanted "Speedy Eats" visual design to always refer back to its core mission of empowering dine-in services for customers.

Predominantly orange palettes imbuedscreens with Satisfying/energizing: In the west, orange foods are typically associated with falltraditions, such as pumpkin items, squash, andcandy corn.

Simple button states and clear iconography like"Poppins" would make chores feel more achievable, while a single, modern sans-serif with wide, open counters would assure legibility and clarity in messaging.

The high-fidelity prototype provided test users with the closest experience to the real thing yet, and it exposed several flaws. While customers were able to schedule a table at a restaurant, the genuine quality of the experience indicated some trepidation. What happens after booking a table with an order if they want to order extra products? These were some of the questions voiced by test subjects. They were also able to articulate a requirement they hadn't considered before for this iteration: may the app somehow visualize the value of being able to book a table with a pre-set of orders—yet another piece, of information that may enable them to make smarter decisions.
